Microsoft going Mac way - To open app store for Windows

With the launch of Windows 8 in cards, Microsoft has announced its plan to launch Apps store for Windows to take on Apple and Google in the booming market of fun, hip or functional programs built for smart phones, tablets, or computers.

The software giant has a long way to go to catch up with the likes of Apple and Google. But considering the kind of reach that Windows has across globe, it is sure to score big. Besides, the independent developers who, understandably devote their limited resources to making programs for platforms that promise the most potential customers, and Windows would outshine Apple gadgets and Google Android devices in that regard.

Additionally,  unlike Apple, Windows Store will let developers set their own prices for applications in a range from $1.49 to $999.9.

The only challenge for Microsoft would be - it's meager presence when it comes to smartphones and tablets, where third-party applications such as games are typically bought.

Windows Store will feature only free applications when it opens in February. Information for developers was available online at dev.windows.com.
