No 'iPad' for Apple in China

Apple, in a lawsuit field in China to protect the 'iPad' name in that country, hit a roadblock as that was rejected by the local courts.

The Municipal Intermediate People's Court in the town of Shenzhen rejected Apple's claim because Proview Technology, the company accused by Apple of infringing on the iPad trademark, legally registered the name for use in mainland China back in 2001 (and in Taiwan in 2000). Although Apple bought the rights to use the iPad name in Taiwan in 2009, Proview still retains the right to the name in mainland China, Xinhua said.

This came as a major setback for Apple as, since opening its first store in China in 2008, its Shanghai and Beijing stores generate the highest average revenue of any store in its chain. And as we all remember -the debut of the iPad 2 in Beijing was so popular that nearly 1,000 people lined up to buy the same even before the store opened, and things became so frenzied that fights even broke out.

As Apple CEO Tim Cook remarked, "China, the sky's the limit there."

We are really waiting to see what Apple's next move is?

Can India filter the Internet?

Soon after governments announcement to dictate a code of conduct for the social media networks and other websites, there has been reassurances pouring in from all major social networking giants that they would remove content that violates their terms. But looks like this is falling on deaf ears, with government indicating a hardening its stance.

But the question arises, can government filter the internet?? Similar issue was earlier raised in Australia in 2008. But the legislation to enact this policy still has not been drafted till date. It also happened in few other countries like - China, Pakistan, Myanmar and Saudi - And India surely would not want to be a part of this group. So can it happen in India is still a question. But as far as I feel, this is difficult and illogical and here are my few take as to why?? --

(1) The web filter would slow down the internet - with posts appearing after days. Can the government provide us an alternative to that??
(2) The Web filter can be easily bypassed by a proxy server.
(3) The web filter's implementation, deployment and maintenance costs would be footed by the tax-payer (I am sure no body love that :))
(4) The web filter cannot block peer to peer sites, which are responsible for most of the file sharing across the globe.

Leaving aside all these technicality, we live in a matured society. And everyone has his own sense of judgment. If someone want to look at these offensive material, no matter what you do, he will get to that by all means. So unless the mentality is changed, noting can be achieved. All technology can be broken - No matter how 'LATEST' it is.

So, to start with, instead of dictating a code of conduct, a rational request from India to Google or Facebook to bring down offensive content will be heard -- regardless of jurisdiction.

Microsoft going Mac way - To open app store for Windows

With the launch of Windows 8 in cards, Microsoft has announced its plan to launch Apps store for Windows to take on Apple and Google in the booming market of fun, hip or functional programs built for smart phones, tablets, or computers.

The software giant has a long way to go to catch up with the likes of Apple and Google. But considering the kind of reach that Windows has across globe, it is sure to score big. Besides, the independent developers who, understandably devote their limited resources to making programs for platforms that promise the most potential customers, and Windows would outshine Apple gadgets and Google Android devices in that regard.

Additionally,  unlike Apple, Windows Store will let developers set their own prices for applications in a range from $1.49 to $999.9.

The only challenge for Microsoft would be - it's meager presence when it comes to smartphones and tablets, where third-party applications such as games are typically bought.

Windows Store will feature only free applications when it opens in February. Information for developers was available online at dev.windows.com.

FDI in retail put on hold - Walmart needs to wait!!

Bowing to intense pressure from within and outside, government today announced suspension of its decision to allow FDI in retail, bringing Parliament back to business after nine days of logjam.

The breakthrough in the standoff came at an all-party meeting this morning where the government made the offer to put on hold the Cabinet decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail and the Opposition agreed to it.

My take: FDI in retails would definitely have been a boon for the consumers, where you were sure to get good and quality products in cheaper price. And would have worked in reducing the monopoly of the trader's association. Opposing FDI is nothing but a political gimmick by the opposition. I just hope that this goes through soon.
